Plankbridge was founded by husband and wife Richard Lee and Jane Dennison at their home in idyllic watermeadows near Dorchester, close to the birthplace of Thomas Hardy. Together with a team of craftspeople, they restore and build huts for modern use, staying faithful to the craft skills and designs of the past. They have been making huts for ten years, inspired by the last huts decaying in hidden corners of the Dorset countryside. Both partners are skilled artisans; Richard studied furniture making at Hooke Park College and Bournemouth University, gaining an MSc. in Forest products (design and manufacture), while Jane uses her experience and eye for the traditional to paint and furnish the huts to a high standard. Plankbridge builds shepherd's huts to the original Victorian design. Shepherd's huts were designed for shepherds living and sleeping close to their flocks at the crucial lambing time. The wheeled chassis allowed the huts to be moved by heavy horses into fields around the farm. Traditionally, a shepherd's hut was extremely basic, with a bed, woodburner and a window. Today, a standard Plankbridge hut stays faithful to the original design, with the benefit of modern insulation and double-glazing. Plankbridge prides itself on using the finest materials from the blacksmith forged chassis, to the French oak floors, cast iron wheels, solid brass fittings and Farrow and Ball paints. Attention to detail and quality of finish are hallmarks of a Plankbridge shepherd's hut, setting it apart from the competition. The huts are built to last and become treasured family heirlooms.
