Bobby3OOO Says:

May 2, 2012 - Did you read it? Listening and reading aren't the same thing.

Bobby3OOO Says:

May 2, 2012 - This is just an awful, awful piece of literature. I'd forgotten just how tedious and tortured and archaic the language is. Why on earth do we still ask high school students to read this mess? I admire you for recording this, and I understand why academics are drawn to this sort of literature -- but wouldn't it make more sense to train kids to read 21st century English? It's just not acceptable to structure sentences that way (if it ever was in American English).

thekidsavage23 Says:

May 3, 2012 - Just because you lazy and can't appreciate this doesn't other kids won't. To get to present day you must know the past long live "boring " books!

Bobby3OOO Says:

May 4, 2012 - I don't care that it's boring. It's the language that just irritates the hell out of me. There are sentences in this mess that run to over 100 words. One gem in this selection tops out at 106. It's just not useful for students to wrestle with this mess. The reader can't even keep up with the parenthetical phrasing. (probably because she's occupied with keeping up her accent.) .

Bobby3OOO Says:

May 4, 2012 - I appreciate it as a historical footnote and an early example of social commentary and a seed of feminist thought; but it's not worth studying. There is a finite amount of time available to teach literature and English to secondary students, and there are MANY better ways for them to spend their time. Why not read selections of works -- like case extracts in law school?

OneWhiteMoth Says:

May 6, 2012 - So sad to see that people don't like the book just because it's a little difficult to read- its like anything, once you get used to it then it's easy! And the story made me want to work through the problems I had at first - its one of my favourite books now, along with Wuthering Heights.
