A first look at the unique shepherd's hut being built for Chelsea Flower Show 2012 and the Plankbridge Hutmakers Artisan Garden inspired by Dorset. Plankbridge have hand-built authentic shepherd's huts since the year 2000. Shepherds' huts are corrugated iron-clad wheeled vehicles with a distinctive curved roof. They were originally used on Victorian farms in Dorset to give shepherds shelter during lambing times. The opening scene of Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy, which describes the shepherd Gabriel Oak caring for a newborn lamb in his hut, was set in fields near Plankbridge's workshop. Plankbridge were the first company to revive the craft of hutmaking and restore antique shepherd's huts for contemporary use as garden retreats, home offices and extra accommodation. Plankbridge pride themselves on attention to detail, faithfulness to tradition and using the finest sustainable materials using local suppliers and craftsmen. Their huts' simple lines grace any garden scheme, traditional or contemporary. Every Plankbridge hut is fully bespoke, including colours and fittings such as the traditional woodburner, hand made windows, fittings and furniture. Exhibiting at RHS Chelsea is a huge milestone and privilege. Plankbridge are very proud that a Plankbridge hut will be the first shepherd's hut ever seen in an RHS Chelsea show garden -- at the most prestigious flower show in the world. The Artisan Gardens area is the ideal place to focus attention on the simple beauty and craftsmanship of a shepherd's hut. The garden, featuring a wildflower garden and disused watercress bed, is very personal to Plankbridge: not only because the hut is hand made, but also because much of the garden will come from the company founders' own garden in Piddlehinton - a wildlife haven. Plankbridge hope that visitors to their show garden, whether they are professional garden designers or home enthusiasts will appreciate and be inspired by the design and craft skills on display. Plankbridge hope that visitors will take home a lasting memory of a revived craft, shown in a beautiful setting, rooted in Dorset tradition and literature.
