In 2009, Sutton Council stepped in to take responsibility for the care of the residents of Orchard Hill Hospital, a home for adults with profound learning disabilities, following reports of institutional abuse at the home. The Council along with NHS Sutton and Merton Primary Care Trust were determined to ensure that people with learning disabilities would enjoy the full rights of any citizen in our society. The residents were moved into supported accommodation and provided with the help they needed to live more fulfilling, more independent lives. In 2011, independent research into the move found that the quality of life for the residents had 'significantly improved', and that the move offered lessons to be learned locally, nationally and internationally. This video tells the story of three of those residents whose lives have been transformed since leaving Orchard Hill.
