Ancient Colour (2010) Lam Lan-chee In 2009, I visited the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto with my friend where I spent the whole afternoon in a spacious new gallery featuring traditional Asian art, which has a nice exhibition environment displaying Chinese, Japanese, Korean paintings and potteries. I truly admired the thousands of exceptional objects on disply spanning almost 7,000 years of Chinese history, ranging from beautifully painted prehistoric ceramic jars to elaborate 18th-century furniture. I was especially interested in the ancient Chinese pottery section from the Tang Dynasty. The basic colors of Sancai being yellow, brown and green, and decorated with powerful engravings, fully reflect the cultural, political and economical accomplishment of this most powerful epoch in Chinese history. The idea of the composition is based on exploring various instrumental colors and contrasting textures. Each Chinese instrument has its own character, like the Sheng being capable of sustaining long notes and playing clusters while the Pipa is effective in more aggressive strokes. The composition is divided into three sections: slow -- fast -- slow. It begins with Sheng clusters accompanied by different events by other instruments. The flow of the music is a gradual build up of dynamics and musical intensity until some chanting by the players with strong ancient flavors are introduced in the last section. Sheng: Loo Sze Wang Di: Chu Siu Wai Erhu: Wong Chi Chung Zheng Chiu Tan Ching Yangqin: Pan Ya Sze Pipa Lam Tsan Tong
