Tainan is the former capital and also the oldest city in Taiwan. As time goes by, some of the buildings in the city are abandoned or go under-use. Recently, a new trend of reusing the old buildings comes back and the buildings are being converted into cafes, restaurants, art galleries, bars, or design studios. These transformations are powered by common people and therefore are not organized and well-connected. The "Living Museum" project is to re-link all the potential buildings and spots, using "Museum" as a medium to connect the old houses and different sites. In stead of building a brand-new museum, the whole city is considered as a museum. Whether you are a local citizen, a visitor or just a stranger happened to pass by; you can enjoy the "Living Museum" by walking through the city. The charm of Tainan city is hidden in the meandering alleys. The organic streets, the temple squares and everyday life create a lot of surprises. We use pavements, street furniture, plantings...etc. as the design strategy to suggest couple routes of visiting the "Living Museum". You can choose the directions on your own but at the same time; you still have a sense of what might be waiting for you. An art installation in a pocket plaza, an astounding art work in the atrium of the old office building, or a gallery walk alone the alley, you can find all of these cultural characters blended into the daily lives of Tainan people. "Living Museum" not only links up the old buildings but also revitalize the city. The scatted attractive spaces are redefined by the museum and the public spaces are re-occupied and well- utilized because of the activities brought by "Living Museum". Tainan city was an old city with mixed cultures, and now, Tainan city is a refresh, creative and vivid Living Museum city!
